Real-time OLAP databases such as Apache Pinot excel at accommodating on-the-fly analytical queries, while streaming databases like KsqlDB and RisingWave are designed to perform incremental computation over streaming data. Are these two types of systems friends or foes? Can we achieve the best of both worlds? In this presentation, I'll delve into the distinctions between stream processing and OLAP and why blending their strengths isn't a straightforward task. We'll also explore the inherent design differences between streaming databases and real-time OLAP databases, and showcase how Apache Pinot and RisingWave can work together in production settings.
